How much does stump grinding cost in Florida?

Stump grinding in Florida typically costs $100 to $400 per stump, or $2 to $6 per inch of diameter, with trip minimums around $100 to $150. Additional stumps in the same visit drop to $30 to $70 each. Pulling a stump out with the roots costs more, usually $175 to $516 and up.

Those are 2026 market ranges from national pricing guides, including Florida-metro data. Our own stump removal and grinding quotes come from the actual count, sizes and access, but the ranges tell you what fair looks like before you collect bids.

What do the standard price models look like?

Nearly every contractor prices one of three ways, and it pays to know which model your quote uses:

Pricing modelTypical 2026 rangeNotes
Per stump, first$120 – $400Includes mobilization
Per stump, each additional$30 – $70The multi-stump discount
Per inch of diameter$2 – $6Measured at ground level
Trip minimum$100 – $150Applies to small single stumps
Full removal with roots$175 – $516+Excavation, not grinding

The per-inch model rewards you for measuring before you call. Run a tape across the stump at ground level, count your stumps, and any quote can be sanity-checked against the table in thirty seconds.

Why do rows of stumps price so differently than one?

Mobilization dominates small jobs. One 10-inch backyard stump is mostly trip charge. Fifteen stumps left from a half-cleared lot years ago is real machine work, but each stump past the first prices at a fraction of the first one, so the per-stump math collapses fast in your favor.

That is why the cheapest time to handle stumps is when a machine is already on your property. When we finish a land clearing or mulching job, the stump work folds into the same mobilization and the whole thing quotes as one number.

Grind it or pull it: how does the price decide?

It should not. The next use of the ground should decide, and the price difference just tells you what each answer costs. Grinding takes the stump below grade so the surface mows and takes sod, and it is the cheaper, gentler option for lawns and pasture. Pulling takes the roots out, which fences, driveways, pads and pools genuinely need, and it costs more because it is more.

The wrong version of this story is grinding a stump cheap on ground that needed the roots gone, then finding the problem again when the fence goes in. We price both options on the walk-through and say which one your plan actually needs. In Port St. Lucie specifically, where storm pines and builder leftovers keep the stump supply healthy, we run this exact conversation weekly, which is why there is a dedicated page for stump grinding in Port St. Lucie.

What do Florida stumps do differently?

Three local realities move quotes here. Palm stumps are fibrous and stringy, and they chew up grinding time compared to their size. Pine stumps carry fat, resinous wood and hard roots. And Brazilian pepper does the thing that surprises out-of-state owners: a pepper stump cut or ground flush simply resprouts, because the plant regrows from live stumps and roots. Killing it means taking the root crown out, which is closer to small removal than to grinding.

Hurricane season adds its own inventory. Storm crews clear trunks and leave stumps, which is fair, since stump work is a different machine. It just means Treasure Coast yards collect stumps in batches, and batch pricing is exactly where the multi-stump discount does its best work.

How do you get a real number?

Count the stumps, tape the big ones at ground level, note anything about access like gates or tight side yards, and send that with your address. Photos work. We will usually get you a number fast, the estimate is free, and holes get backfilled and leveled as part of the job instead of surfacing later as a surprise line item.
